We heard the guys coming up the block and when we met them on the sidewalk Ray Laws was complaining about missing the end of Jabber Jaw and Louis Moretti was telling him it wasn’t a very good episode anyway and Burt Hodges told them both that building a fort was way better than sitting inside watching cartoons all morning.

“What took you guys so long?” Jesse asked them.

“I had to get my stuff,” Tommy said. He had a hammer stuck through a belt-loop, a big monkey-wrench poking out of his pocket and a length of tattered rope looped around his shoulder. He was carrying a cracked cabinet door he had dug out of a garbage dumpster. “I can’t find my hard-hat construction helmet, Richie.”

Tommy loved that hard hat, but I knew where he had left it and that he wasn’t ever going to wear it again.

“I hate to say it, Tommy, but I think it was in the car,” I told him.

He gasped. “When it got burned up?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, poop!” he said. “I’ll never find another one of those again.”
